Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Prepare the dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
- Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in vanilla extract.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients: Stir in the applesauce, then gradually add the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
- Bake the cake: Bake for 35–40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool completely before frosting.
- Make the frosting: To make the frosting, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add vanilla extract and cinnamon, then gradually mix in the powdered sugar until the frosting is light and fluffy. Spread evenly over the cooled cake.
