Ingredients
Scale
For the Beef Marinade
- 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
For the Stir-fry
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
To Serve
- 3 cups cooked white rice (or brown rice)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Green onions, for garnish (optional)
- Sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Marinate the beef: In a medium bowl, toss the thinly sliced beef with soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and cornstarch. Let the mixture marinate for 10 minutes to absorb the flavors and tenderize the meat.
- Heat the oil: Warm 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat to prepare for cooking the beef and vegetables.
- Cook the beef: Add the marinated beef to the hot skillet and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned on the outside but still tender inside. Remove the beef from the pan and set it aside to prevent overcooking.
- Sauté vegetables: In the same skillet, add a little more oil if needed, then sauté the sliced onions and bell peppers for 3 to 4 minutes until they are just tender but still crisp, adding texture and flavor to the dish.
- Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant, making sure not to burn it, as this adds a fragrant aroma and depth of flavor.
- Combine beef and vegetables: Return the cooked beef to the pan with the vegetables, tossing everything together until well coated in the pan juices and heated through. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Serve: Spoon the hot beef and pepper mixture over bowls of cooked white or brown rice. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds if desired for an extra burst of flavor and visual appeal.
Notes
- Use flank steak or sirloin for best tenderness; slicing thinly helps with quick cooking.
- Marinating the beef with cornstarch helps to create a velvety texture when cooked.
- Feel free to swap bell peppers for other vegetables like snap peas or broccoli based on preference.
- For a spicier kick, add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes when sautéing the vegetables.
- Brown rice adds more fiber and nutrients if you prefer a healthier option.
- Make sure the skillet is hot enough before adding beef to get a nice sear without overcooking.
