Main Batter:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

For the Topping:

  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cocoa powder. Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla until combined. Fold in chopped pecans.
  3. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar and cocoa powder. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the batter (do not stir).
  5. Carefully pour hot water over the entire dish. Do not mix.
  6. Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the top looks set and slightly firm. The bottom will remain molten and saucy.
  7. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream if desired.
