Ingredients
Scale
For the Puff Pastry:
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (thawed)
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
For the Mushroom Filling:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 small onion (finely chopped)
- 2 cups finely chopped mushrooms (cremini or white button)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or ½ teaspoon dried thyme)
- ½ cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
- Sauté Aromatics and Mushrooms: Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat until melted. Add the finely chopped onion and cook for 2–3 minutes until soft and translucent. Stir in the chopped mushrooms and cook for 6–8 minutes until they release their moisture and the liquid evaporates. Add minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and thyme, cooking for another minute to blend the flavors. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly.
- Prepare Puff Pastry Squares: Lightly flour a surface and roll out the thawed puff pastry into a 10×10 inch square. Use a knife or pastry cutter to slice the dough into 16 equal squares.
- Assemble the Puff Bites: Place a spoonful of the cooled mushroom mixture in the center of each square. Top each with a pinch of shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese. Fold the corners of the square gently toward the center and pinch to seal the edges, or leave the tops open for a rustic appearance.
- Apply Egg Wash and Bake: Arrange the prepared puff bites on the lined baking sheet. Brush the tops with the beaten egg to achieve a beautiful golden finish. Bake in the preheated oven for 15–18 minutes or until the pastries are puffed and golden brown.
- Serve Warm: Remove from the oven and serve the mushroom cheese puff bites warm for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- The mushroom filling can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated until ready to assemble.
