Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
- Herbs for flavor variation (optional)
Wet Ingredients
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus extra for cooking)
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and optional sugar or herbs to ensure even distribution of the leavening and flavoring agents.
- Form Dough: Gradually add the warm water and olive oil to the dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough begins to form. This step helps hydrate the flour and incorporate the fat for tenderness.
- Knead Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it for 4–5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic, which develops the gluten for structure.
- Rest Dough: Cover the dough with a clean towel or plastic wrap and let it rest for 15 minutes. This resting period allows the gluten to relax, making the dough easier to shape.
- Divide and Shape: Divide the rested dough into 6 equal portions and roll each into a ball. Then flatten each ball into a round about 1/4 inch thick to prepare for cooking.
- Heat Skillet: Heat a nonstick or cast iron skillet over medium heat and lightly brush it with olive oil to prevent sticking and add flavor.
- Cook Bread: Place each flattened dough round onto the hot skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown spots appear and the bread is cooked through. Adjust heat if necessary to avoid burning.
- Keep Warm: As each bread finishes cooking, cover with a clean towel to keep warm and soft until all are done and ready to serve.
Notes
- Serve this bread warm for the best texture and flavor.
- Pairs beautifully with soups, dips, or spreads.
- For a fluffier texture, cover the pan with a lid while cooking each bread to trap steam.
- Try brushing the cooked bread with garlic butter or sprinkle with fresh herbs for extra aroma and taste.
