Ingredients
Scale
Sauce
- ¼ cup butter
- 1 large onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ¼ cup flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup chicken broth
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
Potatoes
- 3 pounds white potatoes, sliced about ⅛” thick
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F to prepare for baking the casserole.
- Prepare Sauce: In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Add diced onion and minced garlic, sautéing until soft, about 3 minutes. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to create a roux that will thicken the sauce.
- Thicken Sauce: Gradually whisk in the milk and chicken broth over low heat, stirring continuously until the mixture is smooth and thickened. Bring it to a boil, then cook for 1 minute. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Assemble Layers: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Layer one-third of the sliced potatoes evenly on the bottom, season with salt and pepper, and pour one-third of the prepared sauce over the potatoes. Repeat the layering process two more times, ending with the sauce on top.
- Bake: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 35-45 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown. For an extra crispy top, optionally broil for 3-4 minutes.
- Rest: Remove from oven and let the scalloped potatoes rest for 15 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to settle and the dish to firm up.
Notes
- Slicing potatoes evenly about ⅛ inch thick ensures they cook uniformly.
- For a vegetarian version, substitute chicken broth with vegetable broth.
- Broiling at the end enhances the texture with a crispy golden top layer.
- Letting the casserole rest helps it set and makes serving easier.
- You can add shredded cheese between layers for a cheesier variation.
