Dough:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2¾ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Green food coloring (optional, for dough tinting)

Decorations:

  • ¾ cup whole blanched almonds
  • Red gel food coloring or strawberry jam (for ‘bloody’ effect)


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the dough: Cream together butter and powdered sugar, then beat in the egg, vanilla, and almond extracts. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet to form a dough. Add green food coloring if desired.
  3. Shape the cookies: Chill the dough, then shape 1 tablespoon at a time into finger shapes. Press an almond onto one end for a fingernail and use a knife to create knuckle lines. Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden.
  4. Add the ‘bloody’ effect: Lift the almond, add red gel or jam underneath, and press the almond back into place.
