Ingredients
Scale
Dough:
- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- 2¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Green food coloring (optional, for dough tinting)
Decorations:
- ¾ cup whole blanched almonds
- Red gel food coloring or strawberry jam (for ‘bloody’ effect)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Prepare the dough: Cream together butter and powdered sugar, then beat in the egg, vanilla, and almond extracts. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet to form a dough. Add green food coloring if desired.
- Shape the cookies: Chill the dough, then shape 1 tablespoon at a time into finger shapes. Press an almond onto one end for a fingernail and use a knife to create knuckle lines. Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden.
- Add the ‘bloody’ effect: Lift the almond, add red gel or jam underneath, and press the almond back into place.
Notes
- For extra creep factor, add cocoa powder for ‘dirty’ nails or use slivered almonds with food coloring.
- Chill the dough before baking for best results.
